At 10:17 AM PDT / 1:17 PM EDT today the Akamai Identity Cloud suffered a significant availability impact for customer’s that run in the US East region. This impact lasted 79 min before it was fully mitigated at 11:36 AM PDT / 2:35 PM EDT.
At this time it appears that the cause of the incident was a high rate of requests to several API endpoints in the affected regions. This appears to have been a “friendly fire” incident during which the source of the excessive traffic was an existing customer and not an adversary. Akamai is engaged with the customer in question to better understand this burst of abnormal API requests. In parallel we are preparing countermeasures to keep such an event from recurring.
